How to switch energy supplier
All guides · Updated 26 October 2026
The short version
Switching energy supplier doesn't change your pipes, wires or meter, and your supply isn't cut off. You choose a new tariff, your new supplier handles the switch, and it's usually done within a few working days.
1. Have these to hand
- your postcode and current supplier's name
- your current tariff name and roughly how much energy you use (on your bill or app)
- a recent meter reading — or your smart meter does it for you
2. Check for exit fees
Fixed tariffs often have an exit fee if you leave early. You can't be charged one in the last 49 days of a fixed deal, and variable (price cap) tariffs have no exit fees.
3. Compare tariffs at your postcode
Prices vary by region, so always compare using your postcode. Look at the estimated yearly cost, standing charges, whether the price is fixed or variable, and the exit fee.
4. Sign up and let the new supplier do the rest
Your new supplier contacts your old one. Give a meter reading on switch day so your final bill is accurate. You have 14 days to change your mind after signing up. Any credit on your old account should be refunded.
Can't switch?
If you owe your supplier money for more than 28 days, they may block the switch. Prepayment customers with debt can often still switch if the debt is under a set limit. Ofgem's website explains the current rules.
